You must remember DRM will in no way protect
your market. Others
... will very very easily make DRM-free
copies and distribute them. DRM will
only make life
difficult for the honest and gullible.
The
existence of successful businesses like Netflix seems
to contradict your
theories.
You cannot control my computer without
modifying
the hardware. I will not let you do that.
Don't get mad,
Tom. I have no interest in controlling
your computer or modifying your
hardware. Again, in the case
of my subscription to Netflix, it is I who invited
them on
to my platform, and I who can kick them out any time I feel
so
inclined. I am in control of this relationship with them.
However, I
must concede you do raise an issue. Most of
our computers are already modified
to support a "trusted"
media path. Not sure if yours is, though. I do remember
when
that began, I protested like everybody else. Why? Because it
was an
initiative of Microsoft's, a company that I don't
trust. Since then however, I
have come to appreciate that it
is minimally intrusive, and does permit me to
enjoy Netflix.
I accept it now, but there is always the fear of the
slippery slope. Where do we draw the line? I definitely
don't like Microsoft's
latest initiative with UEFI. I don't
plan on buying a Windows 8 machine. Beyond
that, there is
always the fear that they would try to get legislation
enacted
that we must all use TPM, computers they can trust.
This is all very scary. I
think in the end we need to have a
little faith in our fellow beings on this
planet (not
Microsoft, of course). People have already soundly condemned
Windows 8, and have stayed away in droves from it. People
managed to stop SOPA
and PIPA. But the battle continues. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
