People seem to forget that plants are almost always poisonous. We found a
few species that could be coaxed into leaving out the poison.
But plant
breeders know it is very easy to produce poisonous varieties, eg, potatoes, by
forgetting to check for edibility. GM foods are absolutely the same. Actually,
GM itself is a normal process in nature. We jusy mimic a simple bacterium.
See:
The
case of the poison potato and for more general information Killer Tomatoes and Poisonous
Potatoes?

Opposition to GMOs is heavy in Italy. If there's a chance
that living in Italy affects my opinion, it would affect it
to the opposite way.
Italy was even condemned by the EU for its ban to GMOs,
because there *are* GMOs that are allowed in the EU. Not
many, because the controls in Europe are *much* stricter.
But Bt crops managed to pass.
Look, I admit I don't know Monsanto's practices very much.
Monsanto isn't even a concern here, after all. You can
protest against Monsanto's abuses, but that shouldn't lead
you to think that GMOs are "poison" and "ruin the earth"
just beacuse they're GMOs. That would totally be an a priori
belief, and you know it's bad.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
