Wright brothers patented wingwarping, and, through their
lawsuits against anything that enabled control of an airplane
(on the grounds that wingwarping enabled control, so somehow
ailerons and similar were enough like wingwarping to be
covered), basically stopped airplane development in the US.
Europeans ignored the Wright Brothers, continued development.
At the start of WWI, the US was so far behind in aviation,
the US Government a) used European airplanes, and b) bought
out the Wright Brothers patents so innovation could happen in
the US.
