Excellent synopsis.
Sadly, I don't think people will learn about how we got started.
However, it doesn't matter too much so long as we accomplish our goals, which it
looks like we are moving towards day-by-day.
First they laugh at you. Then they fight you. Then you win. We are nearing the
commencement of stage 3.[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

The lawyers forgot that we're computer programmers. Their language, the Law,
is at it's heart a set of formalized rules. You extract the facts of a case,
apply those rules to them and produce a result. Their skill set is simply
knowing what those rules are and how they interact.
Well, that's my
day job. As a programmer who works with programming languages and libraries
every day, my job is to understand complex and arbitrary sets of rules, what the
results of feeding particular inputs to those rules is supposed to be, and how
different sets of rules (the various libraries, APIs and data structures/classes
I use) interact with each other. My employer doesn't pay me the big bucks to
fail to be able to figure out Yet Another Language or Yet Another Class Library.
The only thing needed is sufficient motivation. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

I suspect 2010 with the award from Library of Congress for the Legal Blawg
category might have something to do with it
Just a wild guess.
