Of course, the type of reactor will affect safety in such emergencies. The
enriched uranium/light water reactors, used in Japan and U.S., along with the
graphite core reactors used in Russia will have a run away nuclear reaction
without the cooling water. On the other hand, with the Canadian
"Candu" natural uranium/heavy water reactors, the reaction shuts down
without coolant. This is dictated by physics of the way those reactors work, so
they're "fail safe". No water, no reaction. In addition, the Candu
reactors have a large containment structure.

Quantifying natural disasters by the number of deaths has always been done. I'm
talking about disasters caused by _human_ technology, incompetence and greed.
It's clear that 3MI, Chernobyl, & Fukushima could have been avoided.
Natural disasters kill a lot of people, much more than man-made ones, but that
comparison is meaningless when we're dealing with things that are totally
preventable.
There will be deaths from Fukushima, not immediately, but eventually. [ Reply to This | Parent | # ]
