You can browse through the Patent database - and you'll see
a lot of narrow patents.
I see we approach this differently - I look at it in terms
of "what does society get for the bargain" and "how well
does this support the goal of Patent (in the US) of
promoting progress" you appear to look at it in terms of
"what does the patent holder get / can do."
I understand that as a patent application someone wants as
much as possible - when I bought a house, I wanted as much
land on the deed as possible. Unfortunately, the other side
(society) said "you're only entitled to X amount." Based
on known damage to progress because of broad patents (see
Wright Brothers, among many others), I don't see them being
in Society's interest.
