That actually is an unfair metric.
In Europe most of us only live a "few" miles from an international
border. For me I can be in France in 100 miles, and Ireland probably isn't much
further. Even in the largest (land area) countries of Europe, it's probably not
more than 500 miles. In many places that sort of distance can easily take you
through three or four countries.
In America you can substitute "states" for "countries" and I
guess Americans travel as much as us, maybe more. But because America only
borders two (also "huge") countries, it's a lot harder for them to
travel internationally like we do.
For example, I'd say I'm very widely travelled (maybe 20 countries on my
resume), but with two exceptions they're all in Europe. A similarly-traveled
American would only have two countries, but many American states, on his
resume.
