what physically changed in the
machine?...
The
cards.
...Can you point out the physical changes in the
machine
itself (not the woven pattern)?
The physical cards.
Not
studied looms pre-Jacquard, but it might be that a loom was created for each
pattern - a new machine for each pattern. Then came along this "general
purpose" loom that could be configured to act like each of these
different machines by changing the "program" cards.
Could each
configured Jacquard loom be said to emulating each previous "new" loom?
In the same way, is it not unreasonable to say that a "software
configured" general purpose computer is emulating a "new"
machine?
If I change my clothes have I become a new person?
But
if someone changes their behaviour, they are described as a "new" person, even
though their physical appearance, etc may/will not have changed, but are they
really a "new" person?
After spending 5 hours trying to get something done
we may say "let's call it a day"; does that mean that a day is now only 5 hours
long instead of 24 hours long?
