I had to look it up here in the corn fields of Indiana, but then again, my
density can approach that of granite at times. Of course, that is why we have

It is German and means 'Human being'.
But in Yiddish (a jewish/german dialect) it has a further meaning: "a
person of integrity."
A mensch is someone who is responsible, has a sense of right and wrong and is
the sort of person other people look up to.
In English the word has come to mean "a good guy."
