Note that this is partly from McAffee, not the most reputable of the
anti-malware companies. Look up the past record of one of their CEOs and you
will see what I mean. The big problem is not that UK companies are unaware of
data protection laws, in which the UK led the entire EU in the beginning, but
the widespread ignorance of US businesses, who not having any significant data
protection laws at home, seem to think that they can behave the same way in
Europe as they do at home. In many circumstances it is illegal for a UK business
to host its data on the servers of a US based multinational because of this, as
personal data can't be hosted on servers in a country which does not have data
protection laws compatible with those of the EU. Businesses have been sold
"cloud" services, hosted who knows where, which frequently put them at risk of
breaking the law. The problem needs to be tackled by world-wide consensus, not
just within the EU. US citizens would benefit greatly from having good data
