I can still remember being taught to count by my father... and the pains he took
to get across that numbers are not real.
Me: "What is a 1"?
Dad: "it is a number"
Me: "number of what"?
Dad: "anything. but then you are assigning a number to "things"..
like "one egg". It is an egg, but an egg is not a number- it is just
an egg.
When he started teaching us kids problem solving, it was always "remember
your units - be they kilometers, meters, miles, feet, inches, wavelengths or

And it is now thought that probably a full half, if not more, of the
population never acquire that [abstract reasoning] ability.
