The sky on Earthis blue due to Rayleigh scattering, the particle mix in the
Martian sky is entirely different and gives a different scattering spectrum. In
addition much of the Martian atmospheric dust is coloured which is not true
on Earth. The result is that ona normal day the overhead sky is yellow but at
sunset and sunrise you getboth reds and blues. The sky is also not uniformly
coloured. This results in a mix of effective colour temperatures across the
image. Sadly these are not true colour temperatures because the coloured
dust removes light unevenly across the spectrum, this results in
unpredictablecolour results.
Many years ago I had colleagues who proposed using photographic dyes that
matched human cone cells but this was never particularly successful and is a
disaster for scientifically useful photography.
NASA do not choose the colour channels of their cameras to make the most
satisfying holiday snaps but to give scientists the most useful data.
