"Remember they used to kill folks in Europe
if their religion contrasted with the reigning
monarch. So the US decided it'd be better to
let people hold any belief"
Don't look down on us too quickly, the "Pilgrim Fathers" left England
for reasons of religious intolerance, this is true, but not because there was
too much but because there was too little! They objected to being forced to live
near Quakers and Heaven forfend even Catholics! By the time it came to write a
constitution of sorts most of Europe had moved on and enough tolerant Europeans
had arrived to dilute these early zealots. It also become apparent that the 13
colonies all had different attitudes to religion, and different dominant
branches of Christianity (They really didn't mean to allow atheists muslims or
any others equality) so they had to agree to tolerate each other :)
