On the other hand, remember Ballmer is a sales guy - this
just could have been a ploy to increase the 'air play' of the
product before release, and MS never intended to have these
requirements anyway.

What they were proposing was way illegal there and they are repeat offenders.
Now, what about that alleged always on camera?[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

So M$ flipped their stance... so what? Does that make them any more trustworthy
than yesterday?
My take is that they realized the backlash was going to hurt initial sales,
which would nudge developers more towards Sony. So they throw out this
conciliatory bone.
Sales improve, they get a couple million units out the door, a hit game or two
to get the live subscriptions hooked... then, once they have a solid core of
addicts, oops, I mean customers, expect an OS update that re-activates all the
nasties and leaves the addicts facing either a box pwned by Redmond, or cold
turkey withdrawal.
Not like they haven't done it before...[ Reply to This | Parent | # ]

The original idea was X-Box One needed to phone home at least
once every 24 hours. Now it's
>> – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can
play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. <<

Color me cynical, I read that as "without ever connecting online,
until we require you to reconnect." Windows validation, anybody?
I had a good look, I didn't see anything about the camera being turned off ...
