What it has is a 'comp-phobic' grandparent and 'virus-prone'
spouse Linux configuration.
I was tired of my part-time IT job, so I got my mother a
Chromebox.
The last time I tried turning on her Windows machine (to
test a webcam) - 'Don't turn that thing on. Too slow!!!'
I was also tired about caring when my wife broke/spilled
stuff on/installed random viruses/installed trojans on her
Windows laptop.
I got a Chromebook.
And then a second one when my wife wouldn't get off the
first one.
They're fast - so she doesn't whine about waiting for
load times - the data is stored on the cloud, so
losses/breakage/orange juice is easy to recover from - and
they're actually quite repairable (already replaced a screen
that a toddler stomped) - and the battery life is marvelous
- so, as long as I charge them each night - my wife rarely
trips me with power cables...
Complaints...
The Chromebooks have slightly weak hinges, so repeated
droppage will damage the casing. Albeit, all of my wife's
laptops have busted hinges...so perhaps not a Chromebook
issue.
Printing from the Chromebox has been slightly dodgy -
with the setup occasionally failing. It would be nice if
Google was to enable some sort of autodetect where USB
printers could be connected directly to the Chromebox and
registered to Cloudprint. This is probably the only real
issue I've had - and it seems like they've got most of the
infrastructure in place...so...I'm hopeful.
