I'd give Verizon 2ยข in the dollar for trying. Until I see numbers otherwise
I believe that a VOIP channel of equivalent quality transmitted over
cellular radio will consume more bandwidth and network resource
than the same audio signal over the raw cell channel. Yes, the cell
channel bandwidth is already fixed by the carrier, which implies that
the VOIP transmission will be of lower quality. Verizon may think they
are doing their customers a favour by blocking a potential cause of
poor service complaints, but they get no marks for PR on this.
I've noticed a tendency lately for public radio in NZ to use Skype
for phone-in interviews. The result has been an increase in rubbish
quality connections, and frequent dropouts, much more so than
over landlines.
